The Koi are differentiated by body color and three or four types of scale patterns. There are hundreds of varieties but we will discuss the most common ones that you may be able to identify. Here is a list of the Koi and their description.
Kohaku are the father of all the Koi. Their body is pure white with red markings. The pattern is spotted.
Taisho Sanke is white Koi with red and black markings. There is more red than black. They are spotted with no black on their head.
Showa Sanke is black bodied with red and white markings. There is more black on their head, pectoral and tail fins. They are striped.
Tancho are white with a red marking on their head and they are lacking red on the rest of the body. The spot on their head is either a circle or rectangle.
Bekko are a solid color with black markings. There are three types. The Aka are red, Ki are yellow and Shiro are white. The markings are spotted.
Utsuri are black striped fish. The Ki are black with yellow, Hi are black with red, and Shiro are black with a white pattern.
Asagi are a bluish fish with a red belly. The pattern on their back is like a net. These fish have regular scales.
Utsurimono are black Koi with one color marking.
Shusui are bluish fish with an orange belly. Rows of dark blue scales are down its back, on the sides, or both and are on an otherwise scaleless body.
Hikarimoyo are metallic fish with a pattern. They have two or more colors other than the colors that the Hikari Utsuri have.
Koromo are similar to the original Kohaku. However, they have accents of blue,goldfish, black, purple and some red.
Gin/Kin Rin have pearl reflective scales. The Gin Rin is pearl-silver and the Kin Rin is pearl-gold.
Hikari Utsuri is the metallic version of the Utsuri and Showa.
Matsuba are fish with a single color with a darker color inlaid in the scales to create the look of a pine cone pattern.
Hariwake are metallic fish with 2 colors and with rows of dark scales.
Koromo are white fish with spotted red markings. These markings are overlaid with a darker pattern.
Goshiki are Koi with 5 colors. They are white, red, black, light and dark blue.
Hikarimuji are single colored metallic Koi.
Kawarimono are non-metallic colored Koi that don't fit into another category.
